The Air-King is an interesting Rolex because it doesn't try to be another Submariner, Datejust, or GMT-Master. It has its own identity.

The first thing that struck us was the dial. The large 3, 6 and 9 numerals combined with the prominent minute scale give the watch an unmistakable aviation-instrument character. The yellow Rolex crown and signature green seconds hand add just enough color without taking away from its purposeful design.

As a professional pilot, the aviation connection is part of what makes the Air-King particularly interesting to me. Of all the Rolex models we've handled, this is the one I naturally gravitate toward. Not because it is the most expensive or the most recognizable, but because its history and instrument-inspired design actually mean something to me.

On the wrist, the Air-King feels like a true everyday Rolex. It is substantial without being cumbersome, immediately legible, and sporty without looking overly casual.

Perhaps that is what we enjoyed most about it. The Air-King doesn't scream for attention, but it certainly doesn't disappear under the sleeve either. It has presence, and there is never any question that you are wearing a Rolex.

This is a watch that feels comfortable almost anywhere — flying, traveling, jeans and a T-shirt, or dressed for dinner. Functional, distinctive and remarkably easy to live with.
