One of the most interesting things about spending time with this Submariner Date is that it doesn't feel like a 2004 watch.
We've now had the opportunity to wear Submariners from 2004, 2019, and 2026, and the differences on the wrist are far less dramatic than the years between them would suggest. In many ways, that may say more about Rolex than anything else.
The 40mm case wears extremely well. It has enough presence that you know you're wearing a quality watch, but it never feels overwhelming. Even the older-generation bracelet didn't feel dramatically different to us in everyday wear. Everything simply feels balanced.
Put this 2004 Submariner beside a brand-new example from an authorized dealer and, assuming both are in excellent condition, there isn't a twenty-year difference in the experience. The newer watch has evolved technically, of course, but the fundamental feeling on the wrist is remarkably familiar.
What makes this particular example especially interesting to us is its more recent history. In 2025, more than two decades after it was originally produced, it was sold through the Rolex Certified Pre-Owned program. That gives us a level of confidence in an older watch that we wouldn't ordinarily have simply from looking at its age.
And that changes how we would treat it.
Some older watches become closet queens — carefully protected, brought out occasionally, and then returned to the safe. This isn't that watch. This is the Submariner we'd put on in the morning and wear. It belongs out in the light, doing what a Submariner was designed to do.
Perhaps that's what impressed us most. After more than twenty years, it doesn't feel like an old Rolex.
It simply feels like a Rolex.

Condition
This watch presents well overall but shows visible signs of regular wear consistent with its age and use.
There are scratches and surface marks present on the case, bezel, and bracelet. The sapphire crystal also has a visible scratch. These imperfections can be seen in the detailed photographs and have been intentionally left visible so the condition of the watch is accurately represented.
Despite the cosmetic wear, the watch retains a strong overall appearance and, importantly, was sold through the Rolex Certified Pre-Owned program in 2025.
This is not a closet-queen example. It is an honest, previously enjoyed Submariner that we would feel comfortable putting on the wrist and wearing every day.
