Few watches are as immediately recognizable as the Rolex Submariner. It is also so familiar that it can be easy to overlook just how well the design works.
After spending time with this one, we understood the appeal.
The black dial and ceramic bezel are clean and immediately legible, while the Oyster bracelet feels substantial and secure without making the watch cumbersome. On the wrist, everything simply feels balanced.
What impressed us most is how well the Submariner combines being a serious tool watch with the refinement expected from a modern Rolex. It has unmistakable presence without demanding attention.
It doesn't scream look at me, and it certainly doesn't disappear under the sleeve either. It simply feels right.
This is also a watch that can actually be worn. Diving, traveling, flying, weekends in jeans or dressed for dinner — there are very few situations where a Submariner feels out of place.
We also prefer the Date configuration. The Cyclops makes the date immediately readable, and while we understand the appeal of the cleaner No-Date Submariner, for an everyday watch the added functionality makes sense to us.
There are more complicated watches, more unusual watches, and certainly rarer watches. But after wearing the Submariner, we came to understand why Rolex has been so careful about evolving this design rather than reinventing it.
It is simply a remarkably good all-around watch.
